CarClever User Guide: AI Car Research in ChatGPT and Claude

CarClever brings AI car research into the assistant you already use — ChatGPT, Claude, or any other AI assistant that supports connectors. Tell it what you are looking for in plain language and it returns ranked U.S. vehicles with deal scores, risk indicators, and ownership cost estimates, drawn from more than 3.4 million active dealer listings covering new, used, certified pre-owned, and demo inventory.

This guide walks through one complete shopping session, from the first question to a dealer listing. Every figure shown below was captured from a live session on 2 August 2026, so your own results will differ as inventory and pricing move.

Setup

ChatGPT

CarClever is live in the ChatGPT app directory. Open @CarClever on ChatGPT and enable it, then start a conversation. You can invoke it directly with @CarClever, or simply ask an evaluation-framed question such as “analyse the deal risk on this listing” and ChatGPT will route to it.

Claude

  1. Open Settings → Connectors in Claude on web, desktop, or mobile.
  2. Choose Browse connectors, find CarClever, and select Connect.
  3. Approve the permission prompt.
  4. Start a new conversation and ask a car-shopping question.

Other assistants

Add the CarClever server to your client’s connector configuration. No API key, account, or sign-in is required.

You will know it is working when a shopping question returns a results card with lettered options rather than a general text answer.

A worked example: buying a large SUV

Step 1 — Search inventory

You type
Large SUV under 60k in 90210

Dealer inventory has no size field, so the assistant translates the class term into an explicit model list before searching — Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Expedition, Armada, Sequoia, Wagoneer — and tells you the translation it applied so you can adjust it.

Vehicle Price Miles Deal Score Location
A2025 Toyota Sequoia TRD PRO$58,99020,88488Oxnard, CA
B2023 Chevrolet Tahoe RST$59,97025,91287Bellflower, CA

I2023 Ford Expedition Limited$53,99128,14886Orange, CA
4,490,856 listings indexed → 927 matched → 751 scored → 9 shown. Filters: under $60,000 · SUV · used · within 50 miles of 90210. No relaxations applied.
CarClever search results showing nine ranked large SUVs with deal scores and dealer locations
Search results, shown here in ChatGPT. The same results render in Claude and other assistants.

Two details are worth noticing. One representative of each model comes first, so a Sequoia, Tahoe, Expedition, Suburban, Yukon, Wagoneer and Armada all appear before the ranking fills the remaining slots. And no relaxations means nothing in your request was loosened — if the search had needed to widen the radius or the year band, it would say so.

Each result is lettered, and those letters are how you refer to vehicles for the rest of the conversation. Follow-ups refine the same search rather than starting over: “under 30k miles”, “only Toyota and Ford”, “no accidents”, “widen to 100 miles”, “show me more”.

Step 2 — Open a listing for full details

This step is a tap rather than a question. Select any listing card to open its full detail view — the breakdown behind its Deal Score, specifications, trim and options, dealer name and location, and direct links to the dealer listing and the vehicle history report where one is available.

Opening details does not disturb your search. The lettered results stay exactly as they were, so you can browse several listings and still refer to “A” or “C” afterwards.

Step 3 — Check purchase risk

You type
Any red flags on A? Should I buy it?
DecisionYELLOW  Low risk — 85 / 100
Title statusNot reported
Recalls0 VIN-specific recalls
Negotiation targetWithheld — market value estimate is low confidence
Repair reserve$650 – $1,300 over 1–2 years

The risk analysis view, with the decision gate and supporting checks.

The decision gate is a traffic light. Green means no structural concerns were found. Yellow means proceed with specific checks. Red means a branded title — salvage, rebuilt, flood, fire, theft or lemon — or an odometer discrepancy, and it overrides every other factor no matter how good the price looks.

In the example above the caution is not about the car. A Sequoia TRD PRO is rare enough that CarClever could not find sufficient comparable sales to price it confidently, so it withholds a precise negotiation target rather than generating one from a formula. Where comparables do exist, you get a specific figure to open at. Recall checks are run against the individual VIN, not the model year.

The analysis also includes a pre-purchase inspection checklist matched to the powertrain — electric vehicles get battery, charging and software items in place of engine and oil checks.

Step 4 — Check affordability

You type
What would B actually cost me per month? My credit is around 720.
Monthly loan payment$1,177
Total monthly cost$1,885 — loan, insurance, fuel, maintenance
Five-year cost of ownership$84,439
Assumptions5.90% APR · 60-month term · $5,997 down (10%) · 12,000 miles per year
Ownership cost for option B, the 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe RST at $59,970.

The full cost stack, with the five-year projection.

The gap between those two monthly figures is the point. The loan payment is $1,177, but the amount actually leaving your account each month is $1,885 — a difference of $708 that a listing price alone never shows.

Every assumption is stated and every assumption is adjustable: “Redo that with 20% down over 72 months, and I drive 20,000 miles a year.”

Step 5 — Compare vehicles

You type
Compare C vs B
Vehicle Price Miles Deal Score
C2025 Ford Expedition Active$45,07326,82087
B2023 Chevrolet Tahoe RST$59,97025,91287
Recommendation: C — same deal score, $14,897 less expensive.
CarClever side by side vehicle comparison with recommendation
Side by side comparison, with the recommendation and the trade-offs behind it.

Identical deal scores, nearly identical mileage, two model years apart, and a $14,897 price gap. That is the kind of thing that stays invisible when you are scrolling a listings site one tab at a time.

The full comparison covers price, mileage, year, trim, dealer, location, deal score, estimated monthly cost, risk indicator, recall status, market-value gap, best-use case, and the main concern for each vehicle. You can compare up to eight vehicles at once, and labels from any page of results stay valid, so you can weigh A against something from page three.

Step 6 — Shortlist and go to the dealer

Ask to save a vehicle to your garage to build a shortlist as you go. The garage holds the price at the time of saving, the deal score, dealer location, vehicle history link, and CPO status, so you can weigh your candidates in one place without scrolling back.

Your garage is a working shortlist for the current conversation. If you want to keep a vehicle beyond it, copy the VIN or open and bookmark the dealer listing before you finish.

Each saved vehicle keeps its own View Carfax Report button wherever the dealer has supplied a history report, so you can open it straight from the garage without going back to the original search. Where no report has been provided, that is worth treating as a prompt to obtain one independently before you make an offer.

When you are ready, ask CarClever to take you to the listing. It resolves the VIN to the full listing on Edmunds, where you can check current availability and contact the dealer directly.

Getting good results

Plain language works, and you never need to learn a command syntax. Most AI car research starts with a sentence rather than a filter menu, so describe the vehicle the way you would to a friend.

  • “Large SUV under 60k in 90210”
  • “Reliable commuter under $20k, no accidents, one owner”
  • “3-row SUV with AWD near Dallas, under 40k miles”
  • “Certified pre-owned Lexus RX in Texas”
  • “Is this VIN priced right? 1FMJU1H86SEA24703”

Include a ZIP code when location matters. If you imply proximity without giving one, the assistant asks once rather than guessing.

Say when a budget is approximate. “Around $25k” lets the search stretch slightly; “under $25k” is treated as a firm ceiling.

Subjective terms are translated, and the translation is shown. “Reliable” becomes a make and model selection, “snow driving” becomes all-wheel drive, “big cargo” becomes an SUV body type plus cargo-strong models. You always see what was applied, so you can override it.

Reading the results

Deal Score runs from 0 to 100 and combines budget fit, vehicle age, mileage, market value, and model reliability. New and demo vehicles are scored on discount against MSRP instead of age and mileage, so scores stay comparable across inventory types. A high score means strong value for its price band. The score is independent of which dealer is selling the vehicle and is not influenced by affiliate compensation.

The coverage line beneath each search tells you how much inventory sat behind the answer. A small number of matches means your filters are tight, so widening the radius or relaxing one constraint will usually open things up.

Market value ratio compares the asking price to comparable sales, so 0.94× market is priced under comparables. Where CarClever cannot find enough comparables, it says so rather than estimating.

Relaxations. If a search cannot be filled as stated, CarClever loosens filters in a fixed order — radius, then year band, then mileage — and reports exactly what changed. Relaxed results are never presented as exact matches.

Good to know

  • CarClever covers United States dealer inventory.
  • It searches vehicles for sale, so lease quotes and factory build-to-order configurations sit outside its scope.
  • Cost figures are estimates with disclosed assumptions, not quotes. Insurance in particular varies by driver, so treat the affordability view as a planning tool and confirm final numbers with the dealer and your own providers.
  • Inventory moves quickly and a listing can sell between your search and your call, so confirm availability and price on the dealer’s own page.

CarClever is built to help you shortlist faster and walk into a dealership knowing what to ask. It works alongside a pre-purchase inspection, an independent vehicle history report, and a test drive rather than replacing them.

Privacy

  • No account, sign-in, or API key is required.
  • CarClever queries public dealer inventory. It does not ask for your name, contact details, or financial account information.
  • Financial inputs you choose to share — credit score, down payment, annual mileage, driver age — are used to calculate that estimate. Supplying them is optional; sensible defaults are used otherwise.
  • Your garage is held for the current conversation only. Nothing is retained against a permanent account, because there is no account.
  • Full details are in our Privacy Policy.

Troubleshooting

No results. Usually too many filters at once, or a ZIP code that cannot be geocoded. PO-box and special-use ZIP codes sometimes return nothing at any radius, so try a nearby residential one. Otherwise widen the radius or drop the tightest constraint.

The results do not match what you asked for. Say so directly — “those are not full-size SUVs” — and the search re-runs with a corrected model list.

A comparison says a label is unavailable. Labels come from searches in the current conversation, and a new conversation clears them. Re-run the search.

CarClever is not being used at all. Check the connector is enabled in your assistant’s settings, then be explicit: “search CarClever for a used RAV4 near 78701”.

About CarClever

CarClever is a research and decision-support layer that helps you evaluate pricing, identify risks, and prioritise listings before proceeding to a dealer. GetCarWise does not sell vehicles and does not act as a dealer or lender. CarClever draws on publicly available vehicle and market data, including NHTSA recall records and dealer-provided vehicle history links where available, and does not independently verify title status, accident history, or vehicle condition.

  • Vehicle history reports. We surface Carfax links when dealers provide them. Where no link is available, obtain an independent history report before purchase.
  • Recalls are checked against the individual VIN through our vehicle data provider using NHTSA records. Recall databases can lag, so confirm current status at nhtsa.gov before purchase.
  • Title status comes from dealer-provided listing data. Where a title is reported as branded we flag it; where it is not reported we say so plainly.
  • Financing and insurance. CarClever does not produce financing offers, insurance quotes, or out-the-door price guarantees.
  • Purchasing. CarClever does not sell vehicles. When you find one, it routes you to the full listing on Edmunds to contact the seller.
